hi bill,

i know a little bit about amantadine, but only a
little. first, i believe it can help ameliorate
dyskinesias - i have read that this effect is
relatively short-term (6 months to a year, which, for
most parkinson's researchers, qualifies as long-term,
at least when one is referring to sinemet - however,
relative to how long most people live with
Parkinson's, one year is decidedly short term) and i
know of one person for whom it worked well in that
capacity.

I started taking it myself at one point - my neuro
thought it would restore my ability to write with pen
and paper. however, on the day i finally reached the
target dosage, right about at noon, every time i would
start to speak, my lower jaw would start doing a
little convulsive-type jig up and down, and my throat
would close, rendering me unable to speak. ironically,
i was on the phone with my health insurance provider
at the time, and the guy kept having to finish my
sentences for me. he did a very good job, now that i
think about it.

needless to say, i was deeply disturbed by this -
difficult to work these days if one lacks the ability
to speak - so i stopped the amantadine immediately. my
neuro thought the jaw jig was myclonus caused by the
interaction between amantadine and wellbutrin, both of
which can have that effect. whatever it was, while it
subsided significantly immediately upon stopping the
amantadine, it did not stop completely for at least 6
months -haven't noticed it recently, so maybe whatever
damage was done by my taking it has been repaired.

and that is all i know.
