In July 2006, HR 810, a bill that would have lifted limits on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research was passed by the US Senate. A year earlier, the House had passed its version. However the bills were immediately vetoed by President Bush – his first veto since taking office. The House failed to override his veto. Supporters of ESCR vow to reintroduce a similar bill in the next Congress. If stem cell research is an important issue to you, it is important to know where the candidates stand – how they voted in the past and how they can be expected to vote in the future.
