Greg, my discussion of Prentice's PD "cures" was what Ertelt called
"psychobabble". I can respect (but not fully understand) people opposing
ESCR if they believe it means killing people, but lying about ASCR is
something else. It shouldn't matter how successful ASCR is if you believe
ESCR is wrong. I think they do this so as not to appear callous and
uncaring.

Thanks Ray.

  Also, just for the record:

Even Catherine Verfaille of the University of Minnesota, whose work with
adult stem cells has been hailed by opponents of embryonic research, has
distanced herself from extreme claims for the promise of adult stem cells.
"My work is being misused...they have put words in my mouth."

The current scientific champion of adult stem cells is David Prentice, a
former professor at Indiana State University and now a "Senior Fellow" at
the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group (do they have
any "Junoir Fellows," or even "Jolly Good Fellows", at the FRC?) . He claims
that adult stem cell research makes using embryonic cell research
unnecessary and that adult stem cells have been used to cure or treat 65
different diseases. But his claims are disputed by both the National
Institutes of Health and the International Society for Stem Cell Research.
This is an example of politically motivated "fringe science" being used to
discredit the conclusions of the vast majority of the scientific community.
It is no coincidence that Prentice is one of Sen. Sam Brownback's favorite
scientists.

To call David Prentice a "scientist" is like calling Chicken McNuggets
"Cordon Bleu".

Prentice's list is NOT ACCURATE. PARKINSON'S DISEASE IS NOT BEING TREATED
WITH ASCs. Dennis Turner's PD returned. The other 2 citations for
Parkinson's on the Prentice list include non stem-cell trials - Amgen's
aborted GDNF infusion therapy trials for Parkinson's. There have been only 9
"cures" using ASCs in 40 years for some blood disorders and cancers...

It takes just 10 seconds to say "Jim Talent supports adult stem cell
research but voted against forcing tapayers to pay for research which has
never cured a single patient and causes tumors in animals."

And Prentice's list is fine. It's totally accurate.
