Scientists Grow Insulin Cells from Stem Cells

U.S. researchers were able to grow insulin secreting pancreatic cells from
embryonic stem cells.

The study was funded by a San Diego company, Novocell.

type II alveolar cells, from stem cells collected from umbilical cord blood

Artificial Liver Grown From Umbilical Cord Stem Cells

Scientists in Britain were able to grow a liver in the lab using stem cells
harvested from umbilical cord blood.

While the liver is miniature in size, it does provide a first step towards
building a fully functioning human liver. This artifical liver can be used
for pharmaceutical testing.
