Yesterday we learned that a bi-partisan group of Illinois legislators, led by Republican House Leader Tom Cross, will be introducing new stem cell legislation in the session beginning in January (HB 138 and HB139). The pair of new bills will formalize the endorsement of stem cell research in Illinois within an ethical framework, prohibit human cloning while allowing for somatic cell nuclear transfer, and provide for $25 million in funding to come from tobacco settlement funds. I have copied an article from the ChicagoTribune on the announcement below and you can see an article from the Chicago Sun-Times here: http://www.tomcross.com/news/contentview.asp?c=37544 Look for more news when the legislature reconvenes in Springfield in January.
