News: on March 4, Team Parkinson will be cheering on the runners and walkers at the LA Marathon as one of its 50 official charities. This is its 7th year, and will reach the $1million mark soon. Come join us at our cheering spot at 11th St. between Figueroa and Flower (within sight of the Staples Center). Margot Zobel, Ken Aidekman and Carol Walton helped us get started and are always supportive. So we think of ourselves as the "Left Coast cousin" of the Unity Walk. Mignone Trenary and Tom Brown gave the team its momentum the first year, then Edna and John Ball have been the volunteer, indefatigable co-chairs since. All money raised goes directly to research under the umbrella of the Parkinson Alliance. There are other "teams" but we all work for the same goal: Fund the Research, Find the Cure. This year's race is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Martin J. Polonsky, who was a member of this list. He died last August.. In 2001 Marty came to a point when he couldn't walk because of PD. With encouragement from Dr. Giselle Petzinger, the University of Southern California Movement Disorders team, physical therapy and his sister Sonya, he trained to walk the 5K on LA Marathon day. In 2003, he did it! A few blocks before the finish line, he fell. By chance at that very moment, Dr. Petzinger and her family were walking by. So arm in arm they made it to the end. With the help of a caregiver, he did the walk again in 2004 and 2006. Marty was a dear friend and I miss him very much.
