Couples Ask to Donate Embryos to Stem Cell Research Category: General, Legislation, Religion, Cure Paralysis, Cure Paralysis Now - By: Faye on April 4, 2007 at 10:52 pm Donating embryos to IVF research or other infertile couples are options many infertility clinics have offered for years, but couples rarely choose either route. Instead, many have begun asking about donating to stem cell research. It can cost couples $300 per quarter to keep their unused embryos frozen. If they no longer wish to pay the fee, and no other arrangement have been made, the embryos are simply discarded. This means that if the IVF treatments were covered by state or federal health insurance plans,... government already technically "funds" what the anti-ESCR folks like to call the "destruction of embryos". It's a situation that is conveniently overlooked, but has been going on for decades! Yet suddenly, when we want to put the discarded cells to good use in potentially life-saving research,.....government funding is taboo. More than anything the discussion should be personalized as a patient helping patient issue, in which discarded cells are recycled for potentially life-saving research. These couples have great financial and emotional cost invested in generating the embryos that they no longer need, and thus can find it comforting to know that their efforts will come to good use. It's a personal aspect those who oppose government funding of ESCR rarely discuss. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off Parkinsn send a message to: mailto:[log in to unmask] In the body of the message put: signoff parkinsn
