Important Stem Cell Info to Tell Your U.S. Senators!
If you want to make a difference in the progress of stem cell research, we
need your help, along with your friends and family across the country.
The Senate version of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act that passed in
the house has been changed to include some new non-controversial wording
that encourages the NIH to pursue other forms of stem cell research. This
bill is S. 5 and is the only pro-stem cell vote.
Another bill, S. 30, introduced by Senators Isakson and Coleman, will be
voted on after S. 5. This bill is a dangerous distraction. It is a
political fig leaf designed to allow stem cell opponents to appear as if
they are supporters. It doesn't affect current stem cell research policy in
any way, but we fear it could create hurdles for future research involving
somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT or therapeutic cloning). Not only is it
important to tell your Senators to support S. 5, we must also tell them to
vote NO on S. 30.
There is one bill that matters, one vote that will advance stem cell
research, and that is a vote for S.5.
PLEASE mark your calendars to call Monday (4/9) afternoon or Tuesday (4/10)
morning. If the lines are busy, don't give up!
