I have PD and have had serious daytime sleepiness. I'm not sure if that's what
your father-in-law has, but here is my experience.

It seems to be related to the PD drugs I am taking. When I was on Sinemet
alone, I would sleep over 8 hours a night and need to take naps during the day
as well.

Now, I am on a dopamine agonist, Mirapex, supplemented with Sinemet, and the
pattern is different. I need much less sleep at night, but I tend to nod off
during the day. This is different from taking a nap. I once fell asleep while
driving and fortunately did not have an accident.

To counteract the daytime sleepiness, there are several drugs available. Most
effective is Provigil, but it is probably not covered by insurance and costs
around $3,000 per year. Ritalin is somewhat less effective, but much cheaper.

You should discuss the problem with your neurologist and perhaps with a sleep
specialist.
