New blood test to check for Parkinson's
By Sophie Scott
Australian researchers say they have developed a simple blood test which can
identify patients with Parkinson's disease.
Researchers from Melbourne's Howard Florey Institute recently developed a
test for the genetic form of Parkinson's disease.
Now they have devised a test which they say can identify patients with all
types of the condition.
It is a blood test which measures levels of a protein released by the brain.
Doctors say the protein is found in low levels in Parkinson's patients,
while people without Parkinson's have high levels.
They are now running a large trial and say if the test proves effective, it
could be in clinical use in two years.
