Hi Elaine,

In my experience if a hospital does not have the
consultants required for a  case the attending doctor
has the option of transferring the patient to a
facility that has the specialist or at the very least
can arrange for the patient to be transferred to such
facility and then be sent back.  The insurance company
should agree to this.  If the person on the phone for
the insurance company declines this then you can
appeal by going to their medical director.  I do not
think this should be a problem with medicare.
Ex patients are shipped to other hospitals for bypass
surgeries all the time.
