A correction to an announcement I forwarded earlier this week.... AAY -------- Original Message -------- Subject: CRFC revision Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2007 11:01:08 -0500 From: Molly Schultz <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] /Dear CRFC Seminar correspondents, Below please find the revised description of Christina Neilson's paper, which will be discussed at the Nov. 2nd meeting. With apologies for the earlier misrepresentation of her work in the original seminar announcement./ Christina Neilson is Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Fellow at The Frick Collection, New York City. Centering on a discussion of Verrocchio’s “Beheading of St. John the Baptist” relief (1477-83, Museo dell’Opera dell Duomo, Florence), this paper addresses the unusual rendering of the scene of the Baptist’s martyrdom within the context of sacred representations on the subject and rituals associated with a religious brotherhood dedicated to condemned prisoners whose patron saint was St. John the Baptist and who rented a room in Verrocchio’s house. The remarkable emphasis in Verrocchio’s relief on the compassionate soldiers is presented within a broader consideration of the spiritual and social benefits of witnessing violence in Renaissance culture, both fictional and actual. -- Abigail Ann Young (Dr), Associate Editor/ Records of Early English Drama/ Victoria College/ 150 Charles Street W/ Toronto Ontario Canada Phone (416) 585-4504/ FAX (416) 813-4093/ [log in to unmask] List-owner of REED-L <http://www.reed.utoronto.ca/reed-l.html> http://www.reed.utoronto.ca/ => REED's home page http://www.reed.utoronto.ca/stage.html => our Web guide http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~young => my home page
