Ken Hyland has some interesting research surrounding how academic  
disciplines shape the nature of both knowledge and argumentation.   
Dwight Atkinson, in the Second Language Journal (I believe) writes  
about the capitalist influence on both the nature of argument and its  
written representation.  Gloria Michalchuk
