Greetings!
Thank you for signing up to receive the PDtrials Bulletin. This regular email newsletter provides you with information on Parkinson's disease (PD) clinical trials that are actively looking for participants, as well as news on Parkinson's research and treatments.
PDtrials is a collaborative initiative of Parkinson's organizations and is dedicated to increasing awareness and education about Parkinson's clinical trials. Please contact us if you would like more information about this effort.

New Clinical Trials
A Study of a Deep Brain Stimulation Device for Reducing Symptoms in PD -
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of bilateral stimulation of a certain part of the brain called the subthalamic nucleus (STN) when using a Totally Implantable Deep Brain Stimulation System as an adjunctive treatment for reducing some of the symptoms of PD that are not adequately controlled with medication. Twelve sites in the US will enroll a total of 136 participants in this study. Learn more

Study of the Efficacy of Rotigotine in People with PD -
The objective of this trial is to assess the effects of rotigotine on the control of early morning motor function and sleep disorders, compared to placebo, in people with idiopathic PD. In addition, effects of rotigotine on specific nighttime and non-motor symptoms of PD will be evaluated. Four hundred participants are needed for this Phase 3 trial. Learn more

Neuroimaging Studies of Depression in PD -
Despite the widespread toll on emotional health posed by PD, few studies have undertaken a comprehensive examination of the neural underpinnings of Parkinsonian depression. This project will compare depressed versus non-depressed participants with PD to healthy people using neuropsychological assessment and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study is accepting 120 participants, including people with PD as well as healthy participants. Learn more

Ceregene Completes Enrollment of Phase 2 Clinical Trial for PD
Ceregene, Inc. announced that the company has completed enrollment of its randomized, controlled, double-blind, Phase 2 clinical trial evaluating CERE-120, a gene therapy product in development for the treatment of PD. The trial enrolled 58 patients with advanced PD across nine medical centers in the United States. The company expects to announce results from the trial in late 2008.Read more
Over-the-Counter Pain Medications May Reduce Risk of PD
Over-the-counter pain medications known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may reduce a person's risk of PD, according to a study published in the November 6, 2007 issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. "Given our results and the growing burden of PD as people age, there's a pressing need for further studies explaining why these drugs may play a protective role," said study author Angelika D. Wahner, PhD, with the UCLA School of Public Health in Los Angeles.Read more

PET Scans Show Gene Therapy Normalizes Brain Function In Parkinson's Patients
Brain scans used to track changes in a dozen patients who received an experimental gene therapy show that the treatment normalizes brain function - and the effects are still present a year later. A recently published study included the clinical results of the novel gene therapy trial, but this new report from the same study focuses on the power of modern brain scans to show that the gene therapy altered brain activity in a favorable way.Read more

Parkinson's Tie to Impulsiveness Studied
Your brain is supposed to fire a "hold your horses" signal when faced with a tough choice. But a brain implant that stops the tremors of PD may block that signal - a new explanation for why some Parkinson's patients become hugely impulsive. Scientists have long known that anti-Parkinson medications occasionally spark compulsions like pathological gambling. Research has found another treatment, a pacemaker-like brain implant, can trigger a completely different kind of impulsiveness. How different?Read more
Tell Us Your Story
At times, we receive correspondence from people living with Parkinson's about their clinical trial experience. If you have participated in a trial that you found through PDtrials we'd love to hear from you. Sharing your experience provides us with insight that only you can offer and helps ensure that PDtrials.org is a valuable resource to the PD community. Please email us at [log in to unmask] to tell your story.
