Whether you face Parkinson's alone or have the help of a loving caregiver such as Gerry, we should be able to do better in the USA regarding medical care. I have no doubt that a government sponsored health care system would have plenty of problems, but for the rest of the industrialized world it seems to work. My Mom and I even benefited from the British system in the late '70's in the Cayman Islands. As a former born lifelong Republican I was always opposed anything that smacked of "socialism", but think patients are losers when competition and profit is so important that it doubly ruins people's lives - ghastly diseases and conditions, financial ruin, and endless arguments and stress. Drug companies and HMOs make huge profits. Is it in our best interests to have "health" be a matter of competition? Who profits from your pain? I consider myself lucky to have Medicare and a secondary insurance, but I cannot forget that millions of Americans do not. I was never a "Let them eat cake" Republican, so I no longer belong in the GOP since it has gotten so regressive, fearful, and theocratic. Gerry and Brig are paying less per person than I do - I am one person, not two. I could pay more and would be glad to, but not $70,000 for batteries replacement and overnight hospital stay. When I have to have complete care, it will demolish my savings. I think it is time to reevaluate which policies are in the best interests of all Americans. Let's not be misled by labels.
