Less than 1000 devices out of a total of 100,000 worldwide. We keep track through our registrations of what patients have devices that could possibly fail and have informed the managing physicians of those patients. The recall was due to a solvent (cleaning solution) used by the lithium ion battery manufacturer that we contracted with for our devices. This solvent can over time lead to the connecting wires to comes lose and stimulation therapy will be lost. All of these stimulators were implanted two and three years ago so most physicians are waiting to see if the battery will die and need replacing before any malfunction occurs. The worst case scenario is the patient's PD symptoms suddenly return. In Arizona, we had a small number of patients affected, less than 10. We, the local reps, have already contacted all the managing physicians involved and told them of the situation. So far, only one patient has had their devices replaced due to loss of therapy. The others seem content on waiting until their scheduled battery replacement. I hope this better explains the situation. Sincerely, Joseph W.
