Embryonic stem cell research is prohibited in Arizona.

Stem cell research on today's agenda

1/21/08 6am: Governor to announce stem cell plan

SANTA FE - Gov. Bill Richardson today will outline his plan to fund
embryonic stem cell research, but opponents are gearing up to voice their
opposition.
During his State of the State address last week, Richardson said he wants to
fund embryonic stem cell research at the University of New Mexico, and wants
the state to become a leader in the research.
Supporters say the research could find cures for cancer, Parkinson's
disease, spinal cord injuries and AIDS.
Opponents argue that the stem cells come from human embryos, ending lives.
Archbishop Michael Sheehan of the Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Fe said last
year that the church is not opposed to research involving adult stem cells
taken from bone marrow, or cells taken from umbilical cords.
