Ken

Thank you for pointing out that blastocysts aren't embryos.

I just want to clarify one thing - the writer of the email you answered
claims that "everyone who wants a stem cell president thinks he will cure
our disease".

I don't think I have ever heard anyone insinuate, suggest or say that a stem
cell president will cure PD. For the record, I am very pessimistic. I
think we will all die with this disease no matter who is president, but the
issue to me is how long it will take to find cures if science is restricted
by theology. If Bush had not restricted stem cell research in 2001 would we
have a cure by now? Who knows? But probably not. Parkinson is supposed to
be the easiest disease to cure, but I have my doubts as we all are so
different with respect to reaction to meds and treatments.

Is it right to have certain religious sects rather than scientists determine
what kind of research they can and cannot do? I don't think this should be
a political or religious issue at all, but it is and we need a pro-research
president. Jonas Salk probably couldn't have gotten a vaccine for polio at
all in the current religious-political environment. The vaccine was
developed by using fetal tissue.
