Just catching up on my email and reading this discussion. Thanks to all the contributors. I shall use many of your explanations in discussing spelling and punctuation with a group of new writing teachers I am mentoring this Fall. The categories and hierarchies are useful, too. But there is a gem I shall treasure from Jo-Anne. Now I won't be able to help myself from grading all the little stories I hear into anecdotes and anectoads. (Someone close to me calls them antidotes, but I guess I'd save that for a category of really good funny ones). All the best, especially to those heading back into classes next week.
