I had DBS in dec 2004 with tremendous success. Before the surgery my
rigidity and dyskenias were debilitating. Frankly, I was so bad that I had
the surgery as my last attempt at independence again.

Usually, the surgery is done with you awake, but I was in such pain that he
put me under for the entire surgery - both sides the same day. They didnt
turn my computers on for 2 weeks and it took 9 trips to get adjustments set,
but it was a miracle. I was able to drive again, live independently in my
home and reduced meds to only requip.
I had batteries replaced last march. I've had problems since then but my
neurologist is repromming me again now.

Would I do this again? In a heartbeat. It has been such a gift of time and
freedom from pain, even as the disease progresses. To me what is important
for successs includes choosing a gifted surgeon. Ask around. Even call
Medtronics. It is also important to choose a caring, patient neurologist
expereinced with DBS. Their time and patience and your ability to give
feedback on how you are doing is critical.
