8:00 a.m. - Experts: Embryonic Stem Cell Use Still Necessary Reported by: RNS Monday, Sep 8, 2008 @08:00am CST The use of embryonic stem cells is still necessary despite the fact that researchers have discovered ways to make powerful stem cells without them. A National Academy of Sciences panel also says there needs to be some regulation of the new stem cell sources especially if they're spliced into animals for experiments. The Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Advisory Committee is revising a 2005 stem cell report because of the recent advances. Scientists have recently found ways to transform ordinary cells into what look like stem cells. These are called pluripotent stem cells. Harvard researchers meantime, say they've been able to change cells from a living mouse from one type into a another. Both discoveries could wipe out the need for embryonic stem cells, but not just yet according to the panel's report. The panel says it's not clear yet which cells will be the most useful for regenerative medicine and that it's likely both will have some use. They say anyone working with any of the cells should have an oversight commit tee to sustain public confidence in institutions conducting human embryonic stem cell research. At the very least they recommend maintaining an institutional registry of stem cell lines. << Back Other Local News Stories from KARK 4 News Rayilyn Brown Director AZNPF Arizona Chapter National Parkinson Foundation [log in to unmask] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off Parkinsn send a message to: mailto:[log in to unmask] In the body of the message put: signoff parkinsn
