I Has the Vision Problems Posted by: Carl on: October 9, 2008 Once only attributed to the side effects of medications, it is now known that Parkinson’s disease can cause visual problems on its own. It is still an uncommon secondary symptom, as to date the experience of most doctors is that Parkinson’s patients rarely report any vision problems. However when they do occur, enough data now exists to show that Parkinson’s disease seems to create unique vision challenges particularly its own. Double vision, usually mild, is the most often reported. It can occur in one or both eyes. Parkinson’s disease can cause the degeneration of muscle control in the body to affect those that control the eyes, thus causing the problem. Other times it can be linked directly to problems in the way the brain is now processing images due to the damage caused by Parkinson’s. Your treating physician will surely have you see an ophthalmologist and maybe also an optometrist to help find solutions that can treat the condition. Another problem is “bouncing” or “wavy” vision known as oscillopsia. Usually associated with nystagmus, this condition produces the effect that everything is vibrating up and down. Patterns in clothing move and jump, and keeping oneself on the right line while reading may be difficult. Sometimes others can witness the eyes of a PwP who has this problem appear to bounce around (nystagmus), and in others the eyes can appear to have no appearance of causing problematic vision even upon examination by a specialist. Treatments do exist that can help, so it’s important that you mention these problems to your treating physicians. Special glasses and sometimes merely switching to contact lenses can cause dramatic changes for the better, so it’s one symptom worth speaking up about.
