Subject: now onto some much better news!

ray, my dear,

during my 7th annual Shake, Rattle and Roll weekend for People with Parkinson's Disease, i included a tour of my friend, Dr. Craig Cady's stem cell research lab at Bradley University. everyone, to a person, came away strengthened by hope that this guy is the real deal. They were impressed by him as a person who spoke straightforwardly and used layman's terms to describe his work. they were in awe of his rapport with his students, who work tirelessly (on their off-hours and free days) just to advance his/their work which they say is because they have met so many parkies who could benifit from their research and gotten to know them personally. and they marveled at the breakthroughs which Dr. Cady is making and his willingness to share his info on his research w/ whomever thinks that they can help him find a cure thru stem cells for disease. Dr.Cady's only problem is getting the stem cells to work with. we have the University of Ilinois College of Medicine located here in town and they recieve
the lions share of the viable umbilicail cord from which the necessary stem cells are harvested. two of the group said to themselves..."'heck, if that's all he needs..." and proceeded to return home to Kentucky and put their thinking caps on and to roll up their sleeves. as a result of this experience, Lindy Jones and Steve Retterer (a couple who met online and who both are pd patients) have announced a new website and umbilical cord collection fund that is already attracting donors, volunteers and interested moms to be. their new website is:

http://groups.google.com/group/ucbd

they have the consent forms online and have already lined up the first donor to the program (soon to be born) and sent Dr. Cady a $500 donation to defray the cost of sending the collection kits and return postage. i am so proud of these two for coming up with this wonderfully useful and helpful strategy that has the power to impact the lives of so many. thank you Lindy and Steve!!! joan
