Applications are invited for the position of Chair of the Department of Professional Communication. This appointment is for a term of normally five years and is effective July 01, 2009. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

The successful candidate will possess the knowledge, vision, and communication skills required to lead the Department, which consists of eleven full-time faculty including the Chair, and twelve part-time instructors drawn from various academic disciplines and sectors of industry. The successful candidate will strongly demonstrate the ability to foster internal and external relationships with students, faculty and staff, and will exhibit a commitment to promoting diversity. He or she will have a Ph.D. in communication or a closely related field, and a record of published research, plus a knowledge of and experience in teaching methodologies appropriate to the discipline.

The successful candidate will:
•	Oversee and nurture the prospective Master’s in Professional Communication
•	Pursue the planning of undergraduate communication majors
•	Ensure curricular integrity and consistency of ProCom courses
•	Promote ProCom within the broader university community, especially program departments
•	Promote the Minor to potential students and program and business partners
•	Work with departmental faculty to develop a vision and a plan that capitalize on the burgeoning field of professional communication, while respecting long-established departmental values and procedures
•	Cultivate scholarly, research, and creative activity
•	Advocate within the university to secure the necessary resources to support the departmental vision
•	Mentor faculty and orient new faculty, sessional and part-time instructors 
•	Delegate duties effectively to the Associate Chair
•	Ensure that all university policies and procedures are followed and executed expeditiously
•	Support curriculum innovation, including alternative course delivery modes and new teaching methodologies
•	Seek out both entrepreneurial and service-learning opportunities and engage in development activities when appropriate
•	Acquire necessary technology and enhance the Department’s facilities
•	Represent the department to the broader community, locally and internationally
•	Establish a clear brand for the Department of Professional Communication

The Department of Professional Communication (ProCom) is an Academic Service Department offering courses in professional written and oral communication to Schools and Programs across the University. Tailored to meet the communication demands of students’ prospective careers, courses focus on the development and application of analytical, organizational, and stylistic competencies. ProCom courses are taken by over 3,500 day students annually, with a further 1,800 students enrolled through the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education.  The Department offers a Minor in Business Communication to undergraduate day students, as well as a Certificate in Business Communication through Continuing Education. A Master of Professional Communication is expected to begin Fall 2009.
