This is a characteristic of older list software, tracing back to the early 
days of the Internet.

In those days, bandwith was very precious, so why waste it sending people 
copies of their own messages.  Also, people frequently had to pay a charge 
for each message they received.

Nowadays, with folks unaware of this history, someone will send in a 
message, not receive a copy, send in a few more copies, then other folks 
send in "we got it, stop already" messages, all of which results in a waste 
of bandwith, which nobody cares about anyway.
