Parkinson's Patients Deserve Choice in Their Healthcare
Target: U.S. House and Senate
Sponsored by: Care2

Many Americans diagnosed with Parkinson's disease or other chronic illnesses are able to stay at home for years with support before they have to go into personal care or nursing homes. They simply need help in housekeeping, shopping or gardening services.

Those who suffer from Parkinson's or other degenerative disease still value their independence, and may be able to live for a long time with the aid of home support.

The unfortunate reality is that more federal funds are allocated to nursing homes than to less expensive community programs. The average annual cost of skilled care at a nursing home is about $75,000, while the annual cost for a part-time health aid to provide care at home is only $28,000.

The Community Choice Act of 2007 will fix this broken system and give victims of chronic illness, like Parkinson's, more choice and independence. Americans should have choices when it comes to long-term care. Urge your representatives to co-sponsor the Act today!

      Dear [Decision maker],

As your constituent, I urge you to co-sponsor the Community Choice Act of 2007 (H.R.1621.IH, S.799.IS). If you are already a co-sponsor, I would like to express my sincere thanks to you for your support.

The Community Choice Act of 2007 was introduced in order to provide Medicaid-eligible individuals with equal access to community-based attendant services and supports under state Medicaid plan coverage.

This means that our aging loved ones and those suffering from diseases such as Parkinson's - our spouses, siblings, parents and grandparents - will have more healthcare options that keep them well, healthy and in their own homes.

With the demographic shift occurring in the U.S., and an estimated 12 million Americans needing care by 2020, the need for long-term care will only grow. That's why government, individuals and the private sector need to work together to make a wider variety of affordable long-term care options available.

Congress must live up to its responsibility to ensure that all Americans - regardless of age or income level - have freedom and independence. Please co-sponsor the Community Choice Act of 2007 to allocate more funds to community-based home healthcare programs.

Suffering is not always optional. Most nursing home residents have two options. Live and suffer with boredom from lack of stimulus or die. Please remember at any time anyone of us can end up in a nursing home or facility at any age, and at the mercy of another who has the power to abuse, neglect and inflict excessive amounts of boredom on us. Who desires to stare at ceiling or floor tiles 22 hours a day? We all deserve to live a beautiful and enriched life at any age. Senior citizens are not shells of old skin. They are human beings, who desire and deserve the same amount of enrichment and love that a newborn baby does.

It is a mistake to think that because you have a few more years behind you, that suddenly home, family, friends and your way of life mean something different to you. Home is still best.

Our elders are our guides - they have wisdom and experience to offer us all. Health care as proposed in H.R. 1621.IH and S.799.IS is very important for the choice it offers those elderly people who might otherwise have to give up their independence and quality of life for life in a more costly nursing home.

My family is in the home-care business and it is so wonderful to see elderly people in their homes with only a small amount of assistance. Please help us take care of the elderly demographic. They are often ignored and not given the rights they deserve. Please help!!

being home makes living feel better. I don't want to be put in nursing care. I would rather die. Home helps a person feel valued, and help makes it possible. Please do this for the many seniors out of which I am one

I think that older Americans, shouldn't just be thrown into elderly homes as a means of convenience or primary solution. They deserve the right to have options, i believe that if they are having in-home care they are more comforrtable, happier, and more willing to do all they can to upkeep their health. I think that they should go to nursing homes in the most critical and major incidents that require them to go. If they are capable of stayig at home, and require alittle or some help then they have the means of staying in their own homes.

My husband and I are dealing with a terminal illness in our parents own home. This was so important to these 90+ year olds that they stay in their home where they are familiar and comfortable. Without the Medicare use of Hospice this would not have been possible. They certainly could not have paid for private care in their home. Please consider the importance of this to many chronic and terminal individuals in the US. The numbers of us will only grow. Thank you for your consideration of this legislation.

My wife has exhibited Parkinson's symptoms for at least the past ten years. She is now in a nursing home in Bloomington being cared for, and we are running out of money. Please back H.R. 1621.IH, or S.799.IS so that we can get the help we need. Thank you very much, Jim Ackerman

I have my mother who refuses to leave her home for fear that she wil not be able to come back home. My brothers and sisters tried to move my mother close to me so I could keep a closer eye on her. She stayed a month and then wanted to go back to her home. She now does not want to leave her home. She needs help.

i would like to have the peace of mind that my grandparents did not have, I know as a member of the family that struggled to keep them in the home with quality care that could really help them both, It is such a stress on the whole family, I cannot imagine that even people in congress given the choice would want to live out there lives in a cold nursing home when they could be in there own homes
