H.R.872-The Stem Cell Research Improvement Act of 2009
On February 4, 2009, Representative Diana DeGette introduced H.R. 872, the
Stem Cell Research Improvement Act of 2009. The bill would require the
Secretary to conduct and support research that uses human embryonic stem
cells, regardless of the date on which such cells were derived. The bill
outlines certain ethical criteria, and would require that the Secretary, in
consultation with the Director of NIH, issue guidelines to carry out the
provisions of the legislation within 90 days of enactment. H.R. 872 also
provides that the Secretary may issue guidelines on research involving other
human stem cells, as determined to be scientifically warranted by the
Director of NIH. H.R. 872 was referred to the House Committee on Energy and
Commerce.
