Help Still Needed to Protect Medical Research in Texas!

            Dear PAN Texas advocates,

PAN, in its leadership position with the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research (CAMR), has been informed that your help is needed again to ensure that the final state budget passed by the legislature does not include a ban on stem cell research funding.

In the next few days, Lt. Gov. Dewhurst will decide which five members of the Senate Finance Committee will work with the five members from the House Appropriations Committee to reconcile the differences between the Senate and the House versions of SB 1, the state's budget. The Senate version of SB 1 still contains a ban on stem cell research funding. The House version does not. Three of the five members of each chamber's conference committee must vote to approve the removal of the clause that bans embryonic stem cell research.

            What you can do:

Please call Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst today and tell him that:

a.. Senators should be appointed to the conference committee considering SB 1 who will vote to remove the ban on embryonic stem cell research.
b.. Embryonic stem cell research is an important research tool that has the potential to help millions of Americans suffering from a variety of diseases and disorders.
c.. Texas should be promoting the pursuit of medical research to help those in our state and around the country, not restricting a promising avenue of research.

LT. GOVERNOR DEWHURST'S PHONE NUMBER IS: 512-463-0001

            Thank you!
