Don't let Parkinson's keep you from exercising -- in fact, if you're living
with Parkinson's, it's important to counteract the negative effects of the
disease with physical activity. This month's healthy tip highlights a type
of exercise that isn't affected by poor balance or coordination -- chair
aerobics!

Sometimes referred to as seated exercises, these routines offer an
all-around, low-impact workout that increases strength, balance, circulation
and flexibility to Parkinson's patients who now find traditional exercising
difficult.
Programs tend to vary, but generally start with a warm-up period and then
some brief cardiovascular exercises before sometimes moving to light
weightlifting and then a cool-down. Each exercise typically involves a
series of slow movements that may include leg lifts, toe taps, knee bends,
arm curls, arm lifts, shoulder shrugs and neck rolls, among others.
Some doctors feel that daily exercise may be as important as medicine for
treating the symptoms of Parkinson's. To find out more in your area, visit
