I am grateful Mary Ann that Ray does not censor the information on the this
forum. Stem Cell research as well as the abortion issue are emotionally
charged and presently there
are religious groups with powerful political lobby who argue "that stem
cell research should be discontinued by the federal government, because the
killing of the embryos is just as heinous as abortion."
Ray has not shared her opinion of her own position on abortion and I have no
idea if she supports or opposes- she has however presented the arguments
that are on the front line of
the stem cell research debate.

President Obama reverses Bush's stem cell research ban; debate rages
along abortion fault lines

Microscopic embryonic stem cells are at the heart of a huge debate.

WASHINGTON <http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Washington%2c+DC> - President
Obama <http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Barack+Obama> made good on another
campaign pledge Monday, but stirred up fresh criticism that pet projects are
sidetracking him from fixing the tanking economy.

The President nonetheless scored points with his base by overturning a Bush
administration order and promising to "vigorously support" embryonic
stem-cell research that could lead to cures for deadly ailments like
diabetes and Parkinson's disease.

"We will bring the change that so many scientists and researchers, doctors
and innovators, patients and loved ones have hoped for and fought for these
past eight years. We will lift the ban on federal funding," Obama said to
cheers at the White House<http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/The+White+House>.

The move to reverse an executive order signed by George
Bush<http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/George+W.+Bush>in 2001
triggered another backlash over Obama's decision to move quickly on
agenda items like health care, education and the environment that won't help
cure the ailing economy - and could cost him political capital.

"Creating and preserving jobs should be our No. 1 priority right now," said
House GOP leader John Boehner<http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/John+Boehner>of
Ohio <http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Ohio>. "Checking the boxes on the
list of liberal special interest groups' priorities simply makes it harder
to get the type of bipartisan cooperation we need to get our economy back on
track."

White House spokesman Robert
Gibbs<http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Robert+Gibbs>scoffed at the
critics. "We can either decide, as Washington typically has,
to kick the can down the road and hope that either the problem goes away or
that somebody else will come and solve it, or we can address the challenges
that face our country and undermine our long-term economic growth," Gibbs
said.

Monday, Obama also ordered his administration to question all the "signing
statements" Bush used to question the constitutionality of new laws he
didn't like. Attorney General Eric
Holder<http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Eric+Holder>will now have
final say.

The stem-cell action fulfilled one of Obama's campaign pledges and opened
the door to potentially promising research.

"At this moment, the full promise of stem-cell research remains unknown, and
it should not be overstated. But scientists believe these tiny cells may
have the potential to help us understand and possibly cure some of our most
devastating diseases and conditions," Obama said.

Nancy Reagan <http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Nancy+Reagan> said she was
"grateful" for Obama's move, noting research could one day lead to a cure
for Alzheimer's disease, which debilitated her late husband, former President
Ronald Reagan <http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Ronald+Reagan>.

Anti-abortion advocates oppose the research because it involves the use of
human embryos, and some fear it could ultimately lead to human cloning.
They, along with Bush, instead support the study of pluripotent stem cells,
which does not use or destroy human embryos.
