Subject: NIH Guidelines Now Workable

NIH GUIDELINES NOW WORKABLE-THANKS TO YOU!

Friends, as you know, the NIH final guidelines have been released.

Overall, they look pretty good.

Major concerns we had with the initial drafts have been reasonably addressed. For instance, stem cell lines derived under previous standards might have been disallowed for minor variations. Instead, stem cell lines derived under procedures close (but not identical to) the new guidelines will be individually reviewed, on a case by case basis.

We did not win everything. Some in the advocacy community hoped that funding for Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer and parthenogenesis should be funded: they were not.

Even so, we now have a clear and reasonable set of guidelines.

Federal funding will be available for stem cell lines derived from blastocysts left over from in vitro fertility procedures, but slated for discard.

A major write-in campaign was waged by ideological opponents. The attempt was clear: to pour a landslide of letters onto the desks of the NIH committee, and hopefully intimidate them into backing off from their support.

The opposition is well-organized and heavily funded. Their best writers trotted out every scare-tactic and obstructionist argument they could find. They inundated the blogosphere, working desperately to rouse each other to a frenzy of letter-writing.

But they did not prevail.

America did.

Hope won, fear lost!

Thank you for your continuing support of stem cell research, and Americans for Cures Foundation.
