Ray, A propos our trajectory back to the Stone Age: I saw a wonderful film last night, Yoo Hoo Mrs. Goldberg, a documentary about Gertrude Berg, who created and played Molly Goldberg on radio and then TV. What brought about the demise of her show and the death by suicide of her costar Phillip Loeb was Joe McCarthy and HUAC. The many lives he ruined and the terrible damage he inflicted on this country continue to haunt us today. I feel as though the spirit of the McCarthy era is hovering over the health care battle. (I can't call it a debate.) I think the screamers, lie-mongers, and Sarah Palin and her ilk are direct descendants of Joe McCarthy, who was as banal as he was evil.
