As a lifelong Republican until 2001, I was never a Kennedy family fan.

I had only bad things to say about Ted after Chappaquidick, but in 2001 after Bush's callous, uncompassionate stem cell policy, I was sure glad Ted Kennedy was in the Senate. In my wildest dreams I never thought I would be so grateful he was on my side.

Here was a Roman Catholic who did not have to be persuaded about the value of existing life. How great to have a champion for embryonic stem cell research who did not have to be argued with while fighting a deadly disease.

I am so sorry I ever doubted the sincerity of the Kennedy family's commitment to the poor, the sick and the disabled. Shame on me.

We sure needed him in the ongoing healthcare debate. What a loss to the nation.

I'll miss him.
