I have not had DBS, but I'll tell you, I am very sensitive to people's
attitudes. I went through a bit of a rough go in 2004 to 2009, depression
etc. I came through it all with a profound appreciation of my wife, family,
and friends, and I am ever thankful for their forbearance, tolerance, and
sympathy. This fuels my attentiveness to their emotional states. I can’t
say that my abilities in this regard have been diminished at least not
permanently. I practically dote on my wife, who works very hard and takes
willing care of me as well.

Just my two cents.

i had dbs in april 09 and depending how i am programmed i have different
emotional reactions. but can always tell how my care partner feels by the
expressions on her face.

i work with an incredibly excellent programmer whom i have seen on five
separate occasions, for as much as two hours at a time as she tinkers with
the settings to give me the maximum effect. some rejected settings have set
me off laughing hysterically and bursting into tears, and  feeling that i
have lost conrol over my emotions - which incidentally, though i experienced
it  for very short time, gave me incredible insight into my bipolar daughter
's lack of control of her moodswings.
but we have settled on a setting that gives me the maximum feedback so that
i am feeling better than when i first joined this list nearly 14 or moore
years ago.

My husband had DBS in July/09. It did not affect his ability to read
emotions, but it certainly made him more emotional.

My dad is actually much more sensitive to the emotions of others
(especially mine!) than he was before he had PD. This may only apply to
certain people.
