The JOOT Theatre Company, University of Dundee, is delighted to announce
that its DVD of the mediaeval morality play Everyman is now available.
The film was made in the Drama Studio of the Dalhousie Building by Dr.
Brian Hoyle (English and Film, School of Humanities) and Danni DeFazio
(Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design) under the direction of
Dr. Jo. George (English, School of Humanities). The actual production,
however, is based upon the JOOT performance of the play done at the
Sorbonne in Paris in December, 2008. Dr. George and the JOOT Theatre
Company chose to set this production of Everyman in the
eighteenth-century Venice of Vivaldi and Canaletto. Venetian Carnivale
distils the shallowness and decadence that is always with us and was
certainly a preoccupation of the anonymous author of the morality play
five centuries ago. Our use of masks, whilst consistent with this theme,
would also have been common practice in mediaeval and renaissance drama
both to identify allegorical characters and to facilitate doubling of
roles – as in this production.

Our DVD, made possible through a generous grant by the School of
Humanities, is actually a two disc set (the second disc enables the
viewer to watch the play with commentary by its director, Dr. Jo.
George). The two disc set is available for £12-99 (plus £2-00 postage
and packing for orders outside of the European Community) and can be
