Thank you for signing up to receive the PDtrials Parkinson's Clinical Research Newsletter. This regular email newsletter provides you with information on Parkinson's disease (PD) clinical trials that are actively looking for participants, as well as news on Parkinson's research and treatments. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Sure-PD Study: Unsuccessful Research Leads to Promising Study by Dr. Michael A. Schwarzschild and Dr. Alberto Ascherio Parkinson's disease (PD) patients are sometimes reluctant to participate in experimental drug trials because there is no guarantee of personal benefit from a study drug, or even of receiving the study drug rather than placebo. Others have no problem with these uncertainties because for them the personal benefit comes from knowing they are contributing to the discovery of new treatments that may help all people suffering from the disease. Yet even these "big picture" individuals can be discouraged from volunteering for demanding clinical research by the reality that any given drug trial faces long odds in the quest to establish a breakthrough treatment. However, it should not be overlooked that studies that may seem to have failed at the time can provide unexpected and highly valuable data that can open doors to new ways of exploring PD. This is an open label study, meaning that there is no placebo and everyone will receive the medication. Learn more. To investigate effective methods of addressing such symptoms, this study will test a computer game-style rehabilitation program for people with PD. The investigator believes that the program will improve performance on a movement initiation task as well as on activities of daily living, such as walking, preparing a meal or opening a medicine bottle. The mechanisms that regulate blood pressure upon standing are dysfunctional in people with orthostatic hypotension (OH), a condition that may lead to inadequate blood flow to the brain (cerebral perfusion) with accompanying symptoms including brief loss of consciousness (syncope), dizziness or lightheadedness, unsteadiness and blurred or impaired vision. This study will measure the efficacy of the drugh droxidopa on symptoms of neurogenic orthostatic hypotension in participants. Learn more. The one-hour webinar (online seminar) will be led by Bernard Ravina, M.D., M.S.C.E., who will discuss how the research community and people with Parkinson's benefit from unsuccessful clinical studies. Dr. Ravina will explain the ways that these Parkinson's trials help shape both the scientific questions and design of future studies.
