The practicall use of the hospital bed is for the caregiver.........to relieve strain for the caregiver bending, lifting etc.   The hospital bed will rise to prevent strain for the caregivers back.  Can your mother be comfortable if the bed is kept in the flat position...........and does she get out of bed at all?  It is lowered then so that she can more easily put her feet to the floor.
