Below is the August 2010 issue of the PDTRials newsletter . more information about currently recruiting trials is available on their website: www.PDtrials.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Parkinson's Clinical Research Newsletter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Alzheimers Data Sharing Project Serves as Model for Parkinson's Study A collaborative effort to find biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease is the model for a large-scale Parkinson's disease (PD) study funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. In 2003, a group of scientists and executives from the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, the drug and medical-imaging industries, universities and nonprofit groups joined in a project that experts say had no precedent: a collaborative effort to find the biological markers that show the progression of Alzheimer's disease in the human brain. Now, the effort is bearing fruit with a wealth of recent scientific papers on the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's using methods like PET scans and tests of spinal fluid. http://www.pdtrials.org/en/clinical_research_news/release/pr_1281707035 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ New Clinical Trials Study of How Speech Disorders Associated with PD Affect Communication in Day to Day Activities This study is exploring the impact of PD on participation in everyday communication activities (activities in which people talk with others, such as making a phone call, visiting with friends or going to an appointment). http://www.pdtrials.org/en/browse/all/1/view/297 Safety and Efficacy of CERE-120 in People with Parkinson's Disease The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and potential benefits of CERE-120 in the treatment of PD. CERE-120 is an experimental drug that is designed to help damaged nerve cells in the brain function better. http://www.pdtrials.org/en/browse/all/1/view/296 A Study to Assess the Clinical Effect of Droxidopa in the Treatment of Symptomatic Neurogenic Orthostatic Hypotension in Participants with Parkinson's Disease This is a study to evaluate the effects of an investigational drug, Droxidopa, in participants with neurogenic orthostatic hypotension, a condition associated with PD that causes a person's blood pressure to fall when they stand up. Learn more. http://www.pdtrials.org/en/browse/all/view/298 Study of XP21279 and Sinemet® in People with Parkinson's Disease Participants of this study will receive an investigational drug, XP21279, in order to evaluate whether it may provide better control of "off" time than Sinemet®. Learn more. http://www.pdtrials.org/en/browse/all/1/view/299 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NIH Conference Explores the Use of Sham Surgery In clinical trials that test new drugs for PD, the process is fairly straightforward: some people get the real stuff and others get a sugar or placebo pill. This is more complicated when the new "drug" is actually a surgical intervention, in the case of PD, brain surgery. What is the surgical equivalent of a sugar pill? It's called sham surgery and it's not simple. http://www.pdtrials.org/en/clinical_research_news/release/pr_1282674610 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Immune System Gene Linked with Parkinson's: Study A gene linked with the immune system may play a role in developing PD, researchers said on Sunday, marking a possible advance in the search for effective treatments. http://www.pdtrials.org/en/clinical_research_news/release/pr_1281963638 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Overlook Researchers To Study Tai Chi As A Way To Help Parkinson's Patients Experts at the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute at Overlook Hospital plan to study the effects of Tai Chi on patients diagnosed with PD, in the hopes that the martial art can help them return to a better quality of life. http://www.pdtrials.org/en/clinical_research_news/release/pr_1281450658 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ UC Parkinson's Treatment Shows Promise Every morning, from about 8:30 to 10, Dan Truesdale froze up. His muscles grew rigid, locked in place because of PD, until the medication finally kicked in, allowing to him get up, move around, live his life. That changed last year when Truesdale, 47, became the first patient in Ohio to receive an experimental drug delivery system that gives his body a continual dose of the medication that lets him control his muscle movements. http://www.pdtrials.org/en/clinical_research_news/release/pr_1281450214 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How Parkinson's Alters the Brain Patients with PD are known to exhibit slowed movements and tremors, but one aspect of their condition is often overlooked: cognitive impairment. http://www.pdtrials.org/en/clinical_research_news/release/pr_1281449797 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Apply Now to PDF's 2010 Clinical Research Learning Institute The last day to apply for the Parkinson's Disease Foundation's Clinical Research Learning Institute is Friday, Aug. 27. The three-day program, held from Thursday, Oct. 21 through Saturday, Oct. 23 in Florham Park, NJ., will train people living with PD to serve as clinical research advocates. http://www.pdtrials.org/en/clinical_research_news/release/pr_1282673741 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Have You Participated in a Parkinson's Clinical Study?
