            Dear Rayilyn,

Positive breakthroughs point to potential new Parkinson's therapies. There's even positive research toward a vaccine that could cure or prevent the disease.

Through APDA you not only build a strong network of grassroots assistance, but you also keep up the pressure toward a cure by funding promising research.

It's true! You create good news each time you give to the American Parkinson Disease Association.

            Ever Closer to a Cure!

            Advancing Toward a Parkinson's Vaccine

University of Texas chemists are moving toward a vaccine that may prevent and cure Parkinson's disease. They're building on previous vaccine research, which indicated that reducing the buildup of the protein alpha synuclein could limit nerve damage in people with Parkinson's.

Finding the Mechanism that Triggers Parkinson's

Scientists at Stanford have identified a molecular pathway that causes Parkinson's by bringing about the death of key cells. The discovery could open the door to new treatments. A genetic mutation results in overproduction of proteins that can cause brain cells to die.

Protein May Help Neurons Fix Themselves

Michigan State University scientists are studying why some neurons in the brain fight off Parkinson's through a unique ability to revive after injury. Understanding how the parkin protein promotes neuron recovery may identify targets for therapies to slow the progression of Parkinson's disease.

            Pickin' Up Good Vibrations

Making waves with ultrasound may unlock the blood-brain barrier that keeps medicine from getting into the brain to do its work. A Columbia University bioengineer found a way to manipulate the barrier to deliver medicine to the brain to treat degenerative disorders like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
