                 Hathaway Researched Parkinson's with APDA?

Hathaway worked closely with Dr. Susan Baser, medical director of APDA's Pittsburgh Information & Referral Center, for her role as Maggie Murdock in the new film, “Love & Other Drugs.”

Dr. Baser, who became the film's medical advisor, provided Ms. Hathaway with realistic, emotional experiences that come with a diagnosis, which helped Anne get her character just right.

Parkinson’s Disease Linked to Urban Pollutants

Washington University’s APDA Center for Advanced Research, which is partially funded by APDA, conducted a large-scale analysis that linked high levels of manganese and copper pollution to increased risk of Parkinson’s in urban America. People living in areas of high manganese pollution had a 78% greater risk of Parkinson’s disease.

                  Promising Parkinson’s Drug in Pipeline

A drug already approved to treat high blood pressure also diminishes the debilitating symptoms of Parkinson’s in mice. Isradipine could soon be available for Parkinson’s patients. With Phase II trials underway, Phase III trials will follow to determine if the drug slows progression of the disease in human beings.

Super-Twisted Light: New Tool for Parkinson’s Research

Scientists created the world’s first “super-twisted” light, which does not exist in nature. Super-twisted light can be used to find protein traces in incredibly small samples of biological material. It’s particularly sensitive to the structures of proteins which cause degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s.

A New Discovery May Help Reduce Dyskinesia

Researchers have identified an overactive pathway in nerve cells that could be modified to reduce or halt the uncontrollable movements of dyskinesia. These movements are an unwelcome side effect of Levodopa, a key drug in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Spread Hope Throughout the New Year!

Don’t forget your APDA family in the new year. People diagnosed with Parkinson’s — and their families — need the hope that comes from the cutting-edge research you support through APDA.

                  Will you make a special new year gift $15 ... $25 ... $35 ... or more now?

Congress reauthorized a provision that allows people 70½ and older to make a tax-free gift of up to $100,000 from an IRA to a 501(c)(3)organization like APDA without being taxed for the withdrawal. However — and this is important — the gift must be made directly from the IRA to APDA.
