The National Neurological Diseases Surveillance System Act Introduced in Senate

Ask your Senators to cosponsor S. 425, the National Neurological Diseases Surveillance System Act. At the Parkinson's Action Network (PAN) annual conference on Monday, February 28, Senator Mark Udall (D-CO) announced that he would introduce our bill in the Senate. On Tuesday, March 1, Senator Udall introduced the bill as S. 425 with co-sponsors Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE), and Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI).

The bill will create, for the first time, separate, permanent, and coordinated MS and Parkinson's disease national registries at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The surveillance system will rely upon existing databases including Medicare, Veterans Affairs, state registries, and other databases to determine the incidence and prevalence of MS and Parkinson's disease across America.

As you know, we do not have accurate information on how many Americans are battling Parkinson's disease. The surveillance system will determine incidence and prevalence of Parkinson’s and lay a foundation for better evaluating and understanding disease factors, including geographic clusters of diagnoses, variances in gender ratio, changes in health care practices, and changes in disease burden and population over time. . Ultimately, better data about Parkinson’s disease will help move important research and treatments forward. Please ask your Senators to cosponsor S. 425, the National Neurological Diseases Surveillance System Act.
