If you know a family caregiver in need of a break, what can you do to help? Here are a few ideas.

Offer them an afternoon off on a day when you or someone in the person's circle of community can visit with their loved one. Present them with a gift certificate for a day at the spa or tickets to a movie. Encourage the family to post respite needs on the calendar in their Lotsa Helping Hands community (www.lotsahelpinghands.com) for eager volunteers to sign up and help with.

            **********************

Most of us take the ease with which we're able to get up and go for granted, but for someone living with Parkinson's disease, the get-up-and-go process can often be a little more daunting.

Below are some tips for how those with PD can make errands and outings a little less challenging - courtesy of Parkinson's Disease: 300 Tips for Making Life Easier.

            Plan ahead before going out.

Put your credit card in an easily accessible place, get out the money you will need, or begin to make out a check if you feel it takes too much time to do in the checkout lane (when you get home, use the store receipt to fill in the amount of the check in the ledger).

If your destination lacks convenient seating (such as a museum, park, mall or other public place) bring your own.

Many outdoorsy types of stores sell portable folding stools that you can take along on walks for rest stoops. Some models come with a shoulder strap, and others have their own tote bag.

If you really aren't feeling up to an activity, skip it.

Surround yourself with caring, loving and nurturing family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Give yourself permission to eliminate people and activities that drain your energy. Be honest with your family and friends if you're having a bad day.
