CALL FOR PAPERS:

47th International Congress on Medieval Studies
Kalamazoo, MI
May 10-13, 2012

Tableaux Vivants

Distinct among the various forms of Medieval and Renaissance
spectacle, drama, and entertainment are those representations that had
no spoken dialogue. The reconstruction and understanding of mimes,
'stommen personagien', or tableaux vivants, triumphal arches, etc.
depend entirely on surviving secondary evidence. This session invites
scholars to report on findings regarding these performances (whether
insular or on the continent) and the contexts in which they arose.
What conclusions can we arrive at regarding costumes, performance
space, scenery, properties, and written explanations provided for the
spectators? What evidence survives in chronicles or correspondence for
the reception of these events?

Session sponsored by the Medieval and Renaissance Drama Society (MRDS)
