In this Tip of the Month email, American Parkinson Disease Association supporters like you have shared some helpful tips on topics ranging from diminishing nausea to learning how to simply have fun again. We hope you find them useful!

            Help suppress nausea.
Eat candied or crystallized ginger. Some people find it a little spicy, but even very small amounts can often do the trick. Ginger in any form has been used for nausea and sea/air/car sickness for ages, and has no side effects. If the other suggestions don't work for you, I hope this might do the trick. —David Black

            Organize household chores.
If you know you have outdoor chores to attend to, but you may not be able to assemble them all in your mind, consider the following: Go to your tool shed, garage, or wherever you keep your gardening tools. Looking at each tool will probably remind you of what needs to be done. Then, take all the appropriate tools out and toss them on the lawn. As you complete a given task, put the specific instrument back in its proper place and proceed to the next one. The same principle applies to indoor work as well. —Thomas F. Heffernon

            Footwear is important.
Because of balance issues, house slippers or socks can be unsafe. Always have a pair of tennis shoes or other well-fitting shoes beside your bed in case your sleep is interrupted during the night or early morning. Then all you have to do is slip your foot into the shoes, and you'll feel much more stable than in sock feet alone. In connection with footwear, use "curly" shoelaces — they don't need tying (which can be another difficult task before the meds have kicked in). —Peggy Willocks

            Always carry a drinking straw.
Despite tremors, you can drink hot or cold liquids and even water out of a drinking fountain with a straw. Carry a squiggly straw! Have fun whenever possible— people will notice anyway, so if you can make it fun, people will smile with you! —Linda Miles

            Maintain a positive outlook.
Do your exercises. Keep up on the Parkinson's breakthroughs (they're happening faster than you think). There are natural dietary supplements that have been tested to reduce or eliminate some of the PD symptoms like tremors. Stem cell research and application in PD give us hope. You can do a lot more than you think you can. Sharpen up your mind with crossword puzzles and Sudoku even if they are the easy ones. Play games with your kids and grandkids. Volunteer in the kids' classrooms. Let people and kids know that good ol' Mr/Ms. Shakeyhand can still do lots of stuff. Dance and sing even if you're off beat and out of tune! —Bill Barnett
