First of all your source is highly suspect. If this is the David Prentice of the Family Research Center I spent several years exposing his false claims for adult stem cells; e.g. especially Dennis Turner, one of Prentice’s Parkinson’s cures on a big list of 63, 87, etc. etc. cures that was widely circulated on the internet a few years ago, I know more than I want to about him.

It sounds like you have not had PD long or been on this List long either.

I just posted the recent possible cure for blindness using embryonic stem cells. In case you missed it here it is:

http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2012/01/23/145636849/stem-cells-show-promise-as-blindness-treatment-in-early-study?ps=sh_stcathdl

I did not get the 7 year old statements with your email, but did just read his testimony before the Ohio legislature where he says the same thing in June 2011.

He talks about “killing” an embryo or blastocyst like it was a fetus or a baby - quite a stretch I’d say. You do know we are talking about microscopic undifferentiated cells and the only right to choose is the owners deciding whether to donate extra IVF embryos to science, freeze them in perpetuity or throw them out.

I don’t think we will know what will work best for which disease unless the research is done. So far, results for adult stem cells have not been validated for Parkinson’s. Apparently they have helped some cancers and blood disorders. The blindness success is a first for ESCs.

Although this Congressional record is nearly 7 years old, I think it is pertinent to the issues you want to discuss. I haven’t read all the footnotes, but it is obvious that, according to Dr. Prentice and his references, there is a fairly broad cross-section of agreement with his treatise.
He says that there are two options available to researchers. One is implantation of the ESC for cloning, the other is to kill it for medical research. Since all agree that they are human embryo’s, that opens the discussion about abortion and other issues. Rayilyn, you mentioned this, but I won’t comment other than to say I respect the right of a woman to choose, just don’t make it a federally subsidized program.
Meg, there is no excuse for that kind of behavior, and whoever is responsible should be punished.
His discussion on Adult Stem Cell research is encouraging, and may be more effective than ESCR, and much more cost effective. As many of you know, I have been the beneficiary of ASC nutrients, and continue to feel their benefits. Not only have I enjoyed relief from PD symptoms, but I have arthritis and used to take 12 ibuprofen a day. I haven’t taken any for over a year, and the pain is now minimal.
I hope you will take the time to read the entire document, and I’ll be expecting to hear from many of you.
Regards,
Dave
