My two cents, and worth exactly that. Many people's concerns over health care expenses arise from the fact that this country spends a HUGE portion of our health care dollars during the very very final end of life stages. We have developed a culture insisting on "life at all costs" - even when simply extending the inevitable by days or hours at huge cost to society, and often untold pain and discomfort for the patient and for families. Personally, I believe we need to invest those end of life dollars in hopice and palliative care. We are all most assuredly going to shuffle off this mortal coil. You can save the money spent on helping me struggle for breath, tethered to tubes and machines during my final days or hours, and instead use it to help me come to peace and understanding with my death, and with pain management of whatever magnitude I decide. I'm not currently actively dying and recognize I might feel differently when I am actually struggling for that last breath - but I hope there is comfort in place to save me from the selfish desire to deprive others for just one more hour of life. The pie only slices so many ways. I, my spouse, and my entire family have strict directives in place BTW. I do attempt to put my money where my mouth is. Obama has entioned the fact that the rising cost of Care is directly related to the ncreased numbers of the Senior population and the expensive treatment for erious illnesses common to them. Denying treatment is going to be a major ost-cutting feature of OBC.....this concept used to be" Unthinkable", but as become "Thinkable", soon to be "Acceptable".....all done for the "common ood".
