great question.  my thought is that helping each other  is a survival 
mechanism.  and as Maryse points out everyone pays some taxes.

A review of history tells us that without health care we have shorter life 
expectancy, higher infant  mortality, more suffering, etc.   The Black Death 
claimed 75-200 million lives, some estimate almost 2/3 of Europe's 
population.  In the modern world life must be awful in parts of  Africa.

You either think progress is good or bad.   I don't want to return to the 
Stone Age.

I also think that college  like elementary and high school should be 
available to all who qualify, the benefit to society is so great.    The 
benefit of "not letting them die" may  mean that the human race survives.

Free is never free because everyone contributes according to their means.
There is also a concept called solidarity.
Ever since humans gathered in groups or tribes, they have tried to look 
after
each other.
