Continuing Resolution Funds Government for Six Months
Sequestration Threat Still Looms
On Saturday morning, the Senate passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to prevent a government shutdown on October 1. The CR provides funding for existing federal programs and agencies at a slightly increased level until the end of March 2013, when Congress will have to finalize the Fiscal Year 2013 appropriations bills. The CR now goes to the president for his signature.
With the government funded in the interim, Congress can now turn its attention toward averting devastating across-the-board cuts (sequestration) that are set to take effect on January 2, 2013. These cuts will have a harmful impact on many government programs and activities important to the Parkinson's community, including biomedical research and drug approvals. For instance, the National Institutes of Health is facing a $2.5 billion cut and the Food and Drug Administration is facing a $318 million cut. It is important that you continue telling your Members of Congress that the health of our nation cannot afford these cuts!
