Dear Roger Graves,

Can English be taught successfully online? Many instructors freeze at the prospect of teaching online, thinking of the digital world as a vast, unknowable space requiring specialized tools and, worse, specialized pedagogy. Not true. Writing teachers can move into an online course by drawing from that most familiar of places: their own teaching experience. Here are a few NCTE resources that speak on the subject of online English courses.

Collaboration and Critical Thinking in Online English Courses” A community college English instructor implements alternative methods of communication to ensure course rigor and integrity as she meets her objectives of enhanced student learning and success.

Easing Your Transition to Teaching Writing Online - This, the first of three webinars about teaching writing online, will provide instructors with strategies for reflecting on one’s teaching strengths and then converting those strengths into an online course experience.

Using Grading and Assessment to Maximize the Online Writing Course Experience--—without Burning Out - This seminar will offer a pedagogical and philosophical approach to reasonable evaluation while providing specific assignments, grading strategies, and rubrics.
