Alas, it was ever so. Kahneman and Tversky have lots to say about why, 
but I find it all profoundly depressing. Ah, we say to the tide, with 
Cnute, stop there. but it doesn't. My first year students, again this 
year, wonder why I don't correct their grammar. On the other hand, 
this year, as in all years in September, I'm hoping that soon they'll 
begin to get it.
